How QPI Is Calculated

Your Quality Point Index (QPI) is calculated using a credit-weighted average formula. Each letter grade you earn corresponds to a numerical grade point (for example, A = 4.0, B+ = 3.5). That grade point is multiplied by the number of units assigned to the course to determine your Quality Points.

Course Quality Points = Grade Point × Course Units
Quality Point Index (QPI) = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Counted Units

Worked Step-by-Step Calculation Example

Suppose you are taking three courses in a semester at Ateneo:

Course Grade Points Units Formula Quality Points
Math 10 A 4.0 3 4.0 × 3 12.00
CS 21 B+ 3.5 3 3.5 × 3 10.50
English 11 A 4.0 3 4.0 × 3 12.00
Total Sums 9 Units 34.50 QP
Final Calculation Formula
QPI = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Units
QPI = 34.50 ÷ 9 = 3.8333... → 3.83

What is QPI? (Quality Point Index vs GPA vs GWA)

Quality Point Index (QPI) is the credit-weighted evaluation metric utilized predominantly by Philippine academic institutions, including Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU), Ateneo de Davao University (ADDU), Ateneo de Naga University (ADNU), Xavier University (Ateneo de Cagayan), and San Beda University.

While international universities use the term Grade Point Average (GPA) and state universities in the Philippines (such as UP) use General Weighted Average (GWA), QPI follows the exact same weighted mathematical principle. The key difference lies in the letter-grade to numerical-value mappings (such as 4.0 scale vs 1.0 scale).

Semester vs. Cumulative vs. Annual QPI

1
Semester QPI: Evaluates your academic performance for a single academic term (e.g. 1st Semester). Used for Dean's List eligibility and term honors.
2
Annual QPI: Combines all courses taken across an entire academic year (1st Semester, 2nd Semester, and Intercession/Summer). Used by university registrars for year-level promotions.
3
Cumulative QPI: The weighted total of every course taken since your freshman year. Used for graduation honors (Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, Summa Cum Laude), retention requirements, and official transcripts.
⚖️

How Course Units Impact Your QPI

Because QPI is a credit-weighted average, courses with higher unit values exert a significantly larger mathematical leverage on your final average:

3-Unit Lecture Course

An A grade contributes 4.0 × 3 = 12.0 Quality Points.

1-Unit Lab / PE Course

An A grade contributes 4.0 × 1 = 4.0 Quality Points.

Consequently, earning a high grade in a 3-unit, 4-unit, or 5-unit course will elevate your QPI three to five times more than the exact same grade in a 1-unit physical education or laboratory course.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1 What is a QPI?
QPI stands for Quality Point Index. It is a credit-weighted grade point average system widely used by universities in the Philippines, such as Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU), Ateneo de Davao University (ADDU), Ateneo de Naga University (ADNU), Xavier University, and San Beda University to evaluate academic performance.
Q2 How do I calculate my QPI?
To calculate your QPI, multiply each course's grade point (e.g., A = 4.0, B+ = 3.5) by its assigned course units to get the Quality Points for that course. Sum all course Quality Points and divide by the Total Counted Units: QPI = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Units.
Q3 What is the QPI formula?
The fundamental QPI formula is: QPI = Σ(Grade Point × Course Units) ÷ Σ(Course Units). For example, getting an A (4.0) in a 3-unit course yields 12.0 Quality Points. Divide the total accumulated Quality Points by total completed units.
Q4 How is cumulative QPI calculated?
Cumulative QPI is calculated by combining all Quality Points earned across every semester and academic year attended so far, divided by the total sum of units taken across all those semesters.
Q5 What is the difference between QPI and GPA?
QPI (Quality Point Index) and GPA (Grade Point Average) follow the same core credit-weighted mathematical formula. However, QPI is the specific academic terminology used by Philippine institutions such as Ateneo universities, whereas GPA is more common internationally.
Q6 Can I calculate QPI for multiple semesters?
Yes! Switch the calculator mode to 'Cumulative QPI' or 'Annual QPI' to add multiple semesters and academic years, allowing you to organize your courses by term and compute your overall cumulative QPI.
Q7 How do units affect QPI?
Units act as weights in your QPI calculation. A 3-unit course carries three times as much mathematical weight as a 1-unit lab course. Getting a high grade in a 3-unit or 5-unit course will raise your QPI significantly more than getting a high grade in a 1-unit course.
Q8 Can I calculate my annual QPI?
Yes! Use the 'Annual QPI' mode to group your subjects by academic year (e.g., 1st Year, 2nd Year) to see both individual annual QPIs and your total cumulative standing.
Q9 Can I use this calculator for Ateneo de Manila?
Yes! Select 'Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU)' from the University selector dropdown. It pre-configures ADMU's standard letter grade scale: A = 4.0, B+ = 3.5, B = 3.0, C+ = 2.5, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, and F = 0.0.
Q10 Can I use this calculator for Ateneo de Davao?
Yes! Select 'Ateneo de Davao University (ADDU)' from the scale selector to use ADDU's official letter grade conversion rules for semester and cumulative QPI calculations.
Q11 Can I calculate my cumulative QPI?
Yes, select 'Cumulative QPI' mode to enter your courses semester by semester and calculate your overall cumulative QPI across your entire stay in college.
Q12 Does a 3-unit course affect QPI more than a 1-unit course?
Yes. Because QPI is a credit-weighted average, a 3-unit subject contributes 3× more quality points than a 1-unit subject, giving it three times the impact on your final QPI.
Q13 Can I use the calculator to plan future grades?
Yes! Activate the 'Target QPI & Grade Planner' mode. Enter your target QPI and the number of future units you plan to take, and the tool will calculate the exact average grade point you need in upcoming semesters to reach your target.
Q14 Does QPI equal GPA?
In terms of mathematical calculation, yes. QPI is simply the name given to grade point average in Ateneo and select Philippine university grading systems.
Q15 Is this an official university calculator?
No. This QPI Calculator is an independent, free utility provided by 600IQ for student guidance and academic planning. Official QPI records are issued solely by your university's Registrar or AISIS portal.
